These set of illustrations are for my art direction and development project based on Robert Bolt’s play, The Thwarting of Baron Bolligrew, a Monty Python-esque adventure about defeating evil aimed at young children.

Instead of being influenced by animation, I looked to illustration, particularly mid-century Slavic and Scandinavian children’s books. Their style is unique and slightly unfamiliar which drew me to that particular style. I was also influenced by Eric Carle’s beautiful use of textures in my work.

I decided to give myself a strict set of rules for these images to keep them consistent in this. style, such as low horizon lines, no backgrounds, minimal use of lines, a limited colour palette, and a few others. Giving myself restrictions really allowed me to be creative with the compositions and attempt to fill the whole space. This was such a fun project and really took me out of my comfort zone.
